You must register a death with the local authorities in the country where the person has died and get a death certificate.
Contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) or the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission for help in dealing with death registration in a foreign country and the repatriation of remains back to Singapore.
There are different procedures to bring the person's remains home, depending on whether you decide to:
-
bring the body home for burial or cremation
- have the person cremated overseas and bring their ashes home
Upon your return to Singapore, you will have to report the death to the Registry of Births & Deaths.
Take your time to ensure that you have gotten all the necessary documents in the country where the death has taken place before reporting the death to ICA.
This guide serves to provide general guidance to the family of a Singaporean who has passed away overseas.
Due to different circumstances for each death, and varying foreign laws and customs, you are encouraged to contact the MFA or an experienced funeral director for help with the procedures.
